Kia's K7 eyes 40% of full-sized market

Kia Motors Corp.'s much-publicised large sedan K7 was launched on the local market Tuesday.

For next year, the company has set its domestic sales target at 35,000 units and exports target at 5,000 units.

From the following year, the company will raise the domestic sales target to 40,000 units and exports target to 25,000 units.

If the 40,000 units target is met, Kia will take about 40 per cent of the country's market for the segment. According to a Kia official, the market for full-sized sedans is about 100,000 units.

Outside of Korea, the K7 will first be introduced in Asian and Middle Eastern markets followed by China and Latin American nations, the company said.

The company plans to introduce the vehicle to North American markets in 2011.

The vehicle is available with 2.4-, 2.7- or 3.5-litre gasoline engines. A 2.7-litre liquefied petroleum gas engine is also available in taxis and vehicles for disabled buyers.

The trim with the 2.4-litre engine ranges from 28.4 million won (US$24,500) to 30.7 million won, the 2.7-liter trim is priced between 30.6 million won 38 million won.

The trim fitted with the 3.5-litre engine starts at 38.7 million won and goes up to 41.3 million won.

The vehicle comes with a five-year, 100,000 kilometre warranty for the engine and powertrain components, and a three-year, 60,000 kilometre warranty for the rest of the vehicle.
