Climate change is already in motion and represents one of the greatest environmental, social and economic threats facing our planet. Last December, the Copenhagen Accord was finalised by more than 120 heads of government that attended the Climate Change Conference. With new commitments on actions toward global warming, the accord mainly focused on measures of energy saving and carbon emission reduction.

As a global food giant, Nestle is committed to being a leader in environmental performance. The Nestle Policy on the Environment was first published in 1991 and has ensured that preserving natural resources and minimising waste has become an integral part of the day-to-day activities in all Nestle operations worldwide. Nestle has aimed to build a business based on sound environment-friendly principles. Nestle has made great efforts to avoid manufacturing and marketing the company's products at the expense of potential risks to our environment. Aligning with the corporate commitment, Nestle is dedicated to creating shared value for everyone and maintaining long-term business development. With this core belief, Nestle Taiwan has conducted several locally environment friendly programs. Energy saving is an integral part of the daily activities for all Nestle employees. In order to reduce its carbon emission, Nestle Taiwan office utilizes new T5 lighting systems that dramatically lower its carbon footprint and save energy. It is estimated that with these systems, the company can save over NT$360,000 (US$11,320) in electricity fees annually compared to last year. More importantly, this action can reduce Nestle's carbon emission by 64 tons per year. Washrooms, aisles and pantry rooms in Nestle's Taiwan head office have been equipped with automatic detectors. If the room is empty for more than seven minutes, the lights will automatically turn off.

Nestle Taiwan also encourages every staff member to turn off their lights during lunch breaks as well as computers after work. In order to facilitate security guards' final check that the lights and electrical equipment are turned off after work, Nestle Taiwan has set up a power master switch on every floor. In order to meet the goal for saving energy and carbon reduction, Nestle Taiwan invites every employee in the office to be proactive in their business for a greener earth.

Looking into the future, Nestle will continue to fulfill the social responsibility of being a leading company and pursue the sustainable development under its “Good Food, Good Life” philosophy.
