One of Southeast Asia's most wanted terror suspects, Dulmatin alias Joko Pitono, was killed in a raid conducted by the police’s counterterrorism squad on an Internet kiosk, in Pamulang in South Tangerang on Tuesday (March 9), a source said.

A squad member confirmed the death of Dulmatin, a leader of the Jemaah Islamiah (JI) terrorist network, who allegedly masterminded the Bali bombing in 2002, which killed over 200 people, mostly foreign holidaymakers.

“He was shot dead just five minutes after he logged on to the Internet,” the source said.

Counterterrorism squad commander Brig. Gen. Tito Karnavian declined to confirm Dulmatin’s death, but said the terror suspect killed was “a big name”.

The source said Dulmatin had supplied weapons to the group of terror suspects currently being targeted in the Aceh regency of Aceh Besar, adding that the suspected terrorists arrested recently had led them to Dulmatin.

Dulmatin is the third most wanted fugitive Indonesian police have killed so far after Dr Azhari bin Husin and Noordin M Top in 2005 and 2009, respectively.

The raid comes less than two weeks ahead of the visit by US President Barrack Obama on March 22. The United States said it would release US$10 million as part of the bounty allocated for Dulmatin.
