US grand jury to decide Bangladesh youth's fate

Publication Date : 22-10-2012

A US Grand Jury will decide whether Rezwanul Ahsan Nafis, a Bangladesh citizen, arrested by the FBI over a “bomb plot” in New York, will be prosecuted or not, a Bangladeshi private TV channel reported last night.

Information related to the Bangladeshi youth has already been sent to the jury that will decide on his fate after examining the evidence, according to ATN Bangla.

Hearings will commence if the jury decides in favour of framing charges against Nafis, who is now in custody, the TV channel reported.

The criminal complaint says Nafis travelled by a van with an individual who he assumed to be a co-conspirator to a New York warehouse. He then tried to detonate a 1,000-pound bomb at the Federal Reserve Bank, reports Los Aangeles Times.

The man he thought was a co-conspirator turned out to be an undercover agent, and the detonator was an inoperative cellphone.

Nafis' parents have disputed that their son is a terrorist.
