Nepal Maoist leader proposes promulgating new constitution

Publication Date : 11-10-2012

Chairman of Nepal's ruling party Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) yesterday floated a proposal to go for fresh people’s mandate by promulgating a new constitution incorporating the issues that have been agreed upon.

The remaining issues will be settled by the new parliament, Pushpa Kamal Dahal added.

Despite an earlier understanding to go for fresh people’s mandate, Dahal has been pushing for safeguarding the achievement made towards the constitution writing front.

“This will be a win-win situation for all the parties. None of the sides will have to face defeat,” Dahal said while speaking at a programme organised by Ganatantrik Manch Samnwai Committee in the Capital.

It would be the best alternative to promulgate the new constitution by setting aside the disputed issues to be settled through the to-be-elected parliament, Dahal said.

Meanwhile, the UCPN (Maoist) has prepared the working list for the party’s upcoming General Convention slated for early next year.

A joint meeting of UCPN (Maoist) office bearers and organisational department held at PM’s residence in Baluwatar finalised the list.

“Thursday’s meeting will make public the list and send to the districts,” said UCPN (M) spokesperson Agni Sapkota.
