Publication Date : 02-10-2012
Five German tourists and a Chinese man were killed yesterday when a bus collided with a container truck on the expressway from Beijing to Tianjin. Fourteen people were also injured in the accident, according to the Tianjin Municipal Publicity Department.
The coach, carrying more than 20 Germany tourists, ploughed into the back of the Henan province-registered truck at around 8:30 a.m. The coach burst into flames immediately, according to one observer. The tourists, from the states of Bavaria and Baden-Wuerttemberg, had only arrived in Beijing yesterday morning and were travelling to Tianjin when the accident occurred.
"The cause of the accident is still under investigation. We will update immediately once there is any progress," said a statement released by the Tianjin Municipal Publicity Department yesterday.
The 14 injured were rushed to the People's Hospital in the Wuqing District of Tianjin. Twelve Germans and two Chinese - a tour guide and the truck driver - were among the injured, according to Tan Ming, assistant to the hospital president.
"They were diagnosed with burns, fractures, and bruises, and three sustained serious injuries," said Tan.
The three seriously injured travellers, two with severe fractures and one who was badly burned, were later moved to two other hospitals for further treatment.
"We gathered more than 50 medical staff right after we got the emergency call. We also arranged German and English translators for the victims," said Tan.
In the afternoon, the injured were visited by staff from the German Embassy.
The coach trip was organised by China Youth Travel Service in Beijing.
