UN welcomes Cambodia's decision to ratify disability convention

Publication Date : 17-08-2012

The United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) yesterday welcomed the National Assembly's decision to ratify the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

"This is a very welcome indication of the government’s commitment to improve the lives of children and adults in Cambodia that are living with disabilities, to promote awareness of their capabilities and to provide access to social services and other rehabilitation and reintegration support," Unicef representative Rana Flowers said.

"Unicef will continue to work with the government in its ongoing efforts to enforce policies, laws and administrative measures that secure the rights of children and adults with disabilities; to combat stereotyping; and to ensure that areas such as schools are inclusive and respectful of the rights of children with a disability.

"We will also support actions to ensure that appropriate mechanisms are in place to promote and monitor implementation of the Convention," she said.

Unicef noted that an estimated 4.7 per cent of Cambodians are living with disabilities. Of these, an estimated 25 per cent are children under the age of 18, many of whom are survivors of landmines and explosive remnants of war.
