Auxiliary police to help secure M'sian shopping malls

Publication Date : 06-08-2012

The home ministry of Malaysia has issued a directive to deploy auxiliary policemen, who are trained to handle security at shopping malls and car parks, starting in August.

Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said the move was part of the government’s efforts to address the recent spate of crime incidents in shopping malls and car parks.

Hishammuddin said Tropicana City Mall, Sunway Pyramid, Suria KLCC and Pavilion would be the first four shopping malls to use the services of auxiliary policemen.

He said the auxiliary police are currently in training and will complete their course on August 10.

Hishammuddin said public perception of crime is important and that more action is needed to allay the concerns of the people.

He called upon more shopping malls and car park operators to follow suit by sending their security personnel to be trained as auxiliary policemen to the Royal Malaysia Police or PDRM.

He also said that a senior police officer would be appointed to lead the Government Transformation Programme’s (GTP) Reducing Crime National Key Results Area (NKRA), with the focus on current issues such as the safety of customers in shopping malls and car parks.

The senior police officer is former Penang Chief of Police Ayub Yaakob.

Hishammuddin said Ayub is an officer who has an in-depth experience in addressing the current issues concerning crime and would be the point person for the police and the home ministry.

He said he hopes this initiative would restore public confidence on security and safety especially those concerning public areas such as shopping malls, parks and schools.

On a related note, the Brickfields police have arrested the Mid Valley robber who is believed to be a member of the Khairol gang wanted for a string of armed robberies in the city.

Inspector Tan Tiong Moi headed the special investigations team and based on some CCTV footage from Mid Valley and tip-offs from the public, managed to nab the robber at his flat where they recovered stolen credit cards, automated teller machine (ATM) cards and the stolen items belonging to the female victim in Mid Valley.
