Cambodia orders early school vacation amid fears of disease

Publication Date : 19-07-2012

Cambodian Education Minister Im Sethy signed an order for kindergartens and primary schools to start their annual vacation two weeks earlier starting yesterday.

"The decision was made in accordance with an order by Prime Minister Hun Sen on July 17," the ministry said.

Although it did not explain the reason, teachers said schools were ordered to close early because of hand, foot and mouth disease caused by Enterovirus 71 (EV 71).
The World Health Organisation said last week that most of the 54 children who died from an undiagnosed illness since April suffered from a severe form of the disease caused by EV 71

A joint declaration by Ministry of Health and WHO said that there was no cure for the disease and urged parents to follow the advice of doctors if children have symptoms such as foot and arm blisters, vomiting, high temperature or weakness.
