Publication Date : 13-07-2012

A large number of Bangladeshi expatriates on Wednesday demonstrated in front of the World Bank (WB) headquarters in Washington protesting the bank's cancellation of promised loan for constructing a bridge on Bangladesh's Padma River over corruption allegations.

Bangladesh's ruling Awami League (AL)'s US chapter organised the demonstration.

During the demonstration,  Siddiqur Rahman, president of the AL's US unit, submitted a memorandum to a representative of World Bank president for reconsidering the loan cancellation decision.

A large number of Bangladeshi expatriates, AL leaders and workers from different US states joined the Wednesday's agitation, reports Bangla daily Prothom Alo.

The expatriates said the WB's decision to cancel the credit cannot be accepted for any excuse.

"Credit is our right, not favour," they chanted.

AL leaders at the programme declared to continue their agitation until the WB reconsiders its decision.

Abdul Momen, Bangladesh's permanent representative to the UN, welcomed the government's decision to construct the Padma bridge with its own fund.

Meanwhile, the staff of the Bangladesh Mission in UN declared to donate their one day's salary to the Padma bridge fund.
