Shrek mesmerises Malaysian crowd

Cast members of ‘Shrek The Musical’ thrilling the 3,000- strong crowd at the Plenary Hall, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

The huge green ogre was all the rage as Shrek The Musical opened to a full house in Kuala Lumpur.

Being the show's first and only stop in South-East Asia, about 3,000 people flooded the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre last night to catch the heartwarming yet hilarious tale of the grouchy ogre Shrek.

Sent by the ruthless ruler Lord Farquaad, Shrek, accompanied by his happy-go-lucky sidekick Donkey, embarks on a journey to rescue the beautiful Princess Fiona who is trapped in a tower.

Based on the 2001 Oscar-winning animated movie Shrek by Dreamworks, the show also featured beloved fairy tale characters like Pinocchio, The Gingerbread Man and The Big Bad Wolf.

Tourism Minister Dr Ng Yen Yen officiated the show.

Lead actors Lukas Poost and Liz Shivener owned the night with their outstanding portrayal of Shrek and Princess Fiona respectively.

The actors were among 70 cast, crew and orchestra members who helped bring the hilarious fairytale to life.

The visual highlight of the show, however, came in the form of a 7.5m-long dragon puppet, which delighted audience members with its spectacular appearance.

The musical, penned by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire, features 19 original numbers by award-winning composer Jeanine Tesori, as well as the popular Shrek anthem "I'm A Believer".

Premiering in New York's Broadway in 2008, the musical earned a Tony Award in 2009 for Best Costume Design and is currently enjoying a successful run in West End, London.

Brought in by Yvents!, Shrek The Musical is playing at Plenary Hall, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre until Sunday.
