Heads of Asean Power Utilities/Authorities (Hapua) met in Brunei yesterday to observe the progress of the Asean Plan of Action on Energy Cooperation (Apaec) 2010-2015, and to find ways of tallying with the latest aspiration on connectivity in the region.

Hj Azhar Hj Yahya, the Permanent Secretary of the Energy Department at the Prime Minister's Office, officially opened the meeting yesterday, where in his speech he hoped that those attending the meeting are able to firm up their positions on what needs to be presented before the Senior Officials Meeting on Energy next month in Cambodia.

"Today's meeting will no doubt further strengthen our friendship and forge greater cooperation in-line with our Asean spirit of solidarity," said Hj Azhar.

He added that in view of crucial matter such as connectivity and high electricity demand, it needs to reach some stage of resolution at this years Hapua Council Meeting in aligning with established efforts of the Connectivity Master Plan.

"This is important as we move towards developing an integrated energy network as part of our approach to address the impending energy challenges as one community. The rapid progress of the implementation of the Master Plan on Asean Connectivity through the Asean Power Grid will substantially contribute to achieving an integrated community in 2015 and beyond," he said.

The permanent secretary said that an effective programme and framework, combined with the great spirit of Asean cooperation will bring a greater level of success in contributing towards promoting a better quality of life in the Asean community.

Hapuas important task now is to prioritise and continue to speed-up the implementation of the Asean Power Grid by addressing challenges associated with them.

"There is a need to intensify particularly on harmonisation of regulatory frameworks, and standards, and establishing appropriate cross-border energy trading arrangements," Hj Azhar said.
