Nepal starts expelling the landless, using tear gas

The government of Nepal initiated a plan this morning to vacate landless squatters who have been residing on the bank of Bagmati River by force.

Large numbers of police personnel from Armed Police Force, Nepal Police have been deployed to vacate land at the UN Park in Thapathali.

More than 200 squatters have been residing in the UN Park.

The government sent four dozer and about 3,000 security personnel at 6 this morning to vacate the area. The police lobbed four rounds of tear gas shells to contain the situation after squatters retaliated against police, sources confirmed.

The government had already issued notice to vacate the area. It has also declared to provide house rent 19,000 rupees (US$226) to 180 families residing there.
