Bangladesh businessmen demand law to ban shutdowns

Publication Date : 04-05-2012

Bangladesh's apex trade body, Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI), yesterday demanded introduction of a law to ban shutdowns, considering the loss it inflicts on the country's economy.

"The government should enact a law banning hartal (shutdown). Hartal impacts negatively on the economy," FBCCI President AK Azad told The Daily Star after a meeting of the FBCCI governing council at its office in the capital, Dhaka.

The meeting was organised to discuss the current political situation and the economy.

The FBCCI held the discussion a day after a meeting of top business leaders on hartal and economy in Dhaka where they had planned to meet political leaders soon to urge them to shun destructive political programmes.

The business leaders had decided to meet Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party chief Khaleda Zia, according to a former FBCCI president.
