Publication Date : 12-01-2014

Police arrested an American citizen wanted for murder by US authorities while the suspect was making a layover at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, officials said yesterday.

US authorities are expected to dispatch personnel to escort the suspect back to the United States tomorrow, officials from the Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB) said.

The suspect, originally from the Philippines, had been on the run after allegedly shooting to death a man in Hawaii on 31 Dec 2013, CIB officials said.

According to the CIB, the suspect bought a plane ticket for the Philippines after the shooting. The US FBI notified Taiwan on Friday that the suspect was on a Hawaii-to-Manila flight which would stop over at the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport.

Taiwan police made the arrest after the plane landed at the Taoyuan airport yesterday.

During questioning by the Taiwan police, the suspect said he was flying back to the Philippines to attend a relative's funeral and denied the FBI's murder charges against him, the CIB officials said.

The CIB said it is the first time that a US-wanted fugitive has been arrested in Taiwan in cooperation with the American authorities.
