Tibetan self-immolator dies in Kathmandu
Publication Date : 14-02-2013
The Tibetan man, who set himself on fire in protest of Chinese rule in Tibet, on the premises of the Bouddhanath Stupa in Kathmandu on Wednesday morning, died in the night while being treated for his injuries.
Thundup Dopchen, in his early 20s, passed away at about 11pm Wednesday night.
Doctors attending to Dopchen said that his death was owing to multiple organ failure as about 90 percent of his body had suffered serious burns. He had been put on a ventilator.
Dopchen had attempted to self-immolate near the Bouddhanath Stupa after pouring petrol over himself. He had then run about 50 metres shouting anti-China slogans before collapsing on the stone-path circumventing the Stupa. He was rushed to the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital after police and locals put out the fire.
