The pandas have landed in M'sia

Publication Date : 21-05-2014

China's pandas Fu Wa and Feng Yi have touched down safely in Malaysia.

The pair who are already enjoying celebrity status among Malaysians, were treated to a water cannon salute by Malaysia Airport Holding Bhd (MAHB)  upon their arrival at the MASKargo Complex at KLIA at 8am on Wednesday, following their overnight flight from Chengdu, China.

Officials from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment revealed that due to a two-hour delay in the flight's arrival time, it was too hot for the pandas to be displayed upon arrival, and they were immediately whisked away.

Earlier, China’s Ambassador to Malaysia Huang Huikang said that he hoped the Malaysian people, especially children, will spend time with pandas Fu Wa and Feng Yi.

Huang was speaking at an early morning press conference at the Animal Hotel, MASKargo, Sepang on Wednesday before the arrival of the pandas.

Commenting on the delay over the flight’s arrival time, he quipped “The delay is because the pandas want to see KL clearly in daylight. They don’t want their 10-year stay in KL to begin in the dark.”

Malaysia’s Natural Resources and Environment Minister G. Palaviel added that Fu Wa and Feng Yi will be quarantined for 30 days before they are “available to the public”.

“May the arrival of these two precious icons contribute towards the everlasting friendship and sustainable cooperation between Malaysia and the People’s Republic of China.

On June 15, 2012, the Malaysian and Chinese governments clinched a deal for Feng Yi and Fu Wa to be loaned to Malaysia for 10 years to mark the 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries this year.
