THAILAND COUP: Reporter sacked for taking picture in defiance of military takeover

Publication Date : 25-05-2014

A Thai female reporter was fired after a picture of her defying the coup was circulated on the Internet, according to Thai non-profit online newspaper Prachatai.

The photo depicts reporter Pornthip Mongyai standing next to a line of soldiers with an “X” taped over her mouth.

The photo, which was taken on Thursday shortly after the military coup was announced, has been circulated on the Internet with some calling it the first act of defiance against the military junta.

On Friday, Mono Group, which runs Channel 29 digital TV, published a letter to the Thai Journalists Association (TJA) stating that Pornthip is “no longer an employee” and that the company did not approve of her action.

Pornthip has released a statement claiming that she did not intend to defy the martial law, nor to send any political message, adding that her actions were purely personal.
