SEWOL DISASTER: Park lambasts captain, warns against civil servants’ negligence

Publication Date : 21-04-2014

South Korean President Park Geun-hye on Monday condemned the captain and crew of the doomed ferry Sewol who fled and abandoned hundreds of passengers in the sinking vessel, saying what they did was an act of “murder”.

“Above all, the conduct of the captain and some of the crew members is hardly unacceptable from the viewpoint of common sense, and it was like an act of unpardonable murder,” she said during a meeting with senior secretaries at Cheong Wa Dae.

Park also ordered the authorities to reveal all wrongdoings related to the ferry’s operations and find those who were involved. Those found responsible for the sinking of the ship, “regardless of their ranks,” will face “criminal and civil charges,” she said.

Expressing concerns about growing public criticism of the government and civil servants, Park said she will throw out “any officials neglecting their duty to serve the people“ and those pretending to be working “just to keep their positions.”

She also ordered officials to review “the government’s initial response and crisis management,” saying they did not work properly and efficiently at the scene.
