Obama reiterates Senkakus subject to Japan-US Security Treaty

US President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe hold a summit meeting at the State Guest House in Moto-Akasaka, Tokyo, on Thursday.

US President Barack Obama reiterated Thursday that the Senkaku Islands are subject to Article 5 of the Japan-US Security Treaty.

At a joint press conference with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at the State Guest House in Moto-Akasaka, Tokyo, Obama also said the Japan-US alliance is a foundation of prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region, stressing that the United States has always been a Pacific nation.

Abe said the Japan-US alliance has been powerfully revitalised, adding that the two leaders had reaffirmed the alliance’s leading role in ensuring peace in Asia.

Abe also said the two countries agreed to continue ministerial talks over the Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiations.
