Native Indonesian fish species in danger
Publication Date : 12-06-2014
The Marine and Fisheries Ministry warned that endemic Indonesian fish species faced extinction due to the breeding of foreign species in Indonesian waters.
“The country [should] take concrete steps immediately to minimise and prevent the negative effects of breeding foreign fish species in the country’s waters,” Marine and Fisheries Minister Sharif C. Sutardjo said on Wednesday.
According to Sutardjo, the ministry has already taken a number of preventive measures, including issuing a regulation based on the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity, Antara reported.
The ministry has also issued directives as references for related institutions in controlling invasive species.
“For that purpose, it is necessary to identify invasive fish species to which monitoring resources can be properly and effectively directed,” he added.
