Nationwide strike turns violent in Nepal

Publication Date : 19-02-2013

Normal life has been crippled across Nepal since early Tuesday morning due to the countrywide banda (strike) called by the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) led by Mohan Baidya.

Trasportation has come to a grinding halt, academic instititutions, and market areas, have been shut down due to the banda.

The party called for a nationwide strike to protest against the decision to let sitting Chief Justice Khil Raj Regmi lead the government.

The CPN (M) has been accusing the big four parties of attempting to form an election government led by the CJ at the behest of foreign countries. The party has been opposing  the idea, deeming the proposal "against the spirit of the parliamentary system."

Meanwhile, the banda enforcers vandalised a van belonging to Sagarmatha Television in Kathmandu Tuesday morning. A tourist bus has also been vandalised in the city.
