Myanmar to explore better rice market in China
Publication Date : 16-05-2013
Myanmar will exhibit a wide variety of rice for the first time at Kunming Trade Fair in China as a bid to boost the market shares, according to Myanmar Rice and Paddy Traders Association.
The five-day trade fair starting from June 6 will display a vast array of Chinese and Myanmar export and import commodities.
“We are exporting rice only to Shweli [Ruili] and Kunming [in China]. So, we will exhibit our rice for the first time at 21st China-Myanmar Export and Import Kunming Trade Fair to expand our market. This will give us a chance to connect with wider markets,” Chan Thar Oo from Myanmar Rice and Paddy Traders Association (Muse Township) said.
Mostly standard quality rice which is 25 per cent broken is now exported to China. Myanmar needs to export higher quality rice in the face of competition from Vietnam, an official from the association said.
He said, “Vietnam is now penetrating China market. Their rice is good looking, but taste is not as good as Myanmar rice. This is what I have learnt from the market. It is very important we expand our markets now. We are trying to export higher quality rice in addition to the current one with 25 per cent broken.”
Myanmar Rice and Paddy Traders Association has been collecting and listing different kinds of rice from various regions in the country.
They have invited farmers to send their sample rice before end of this month.
