M'sian martial arts actor fends off real-life bad guys
Publication Date : 28-07-2013
For Malaysian actor Danielle Lau Cheng Hong, the basic "kung fu" chops he acquired for his roles in films has helped him fend off some armed assailants in a real-life robbery. The 21-year-old was surfing the Internet at a cybercafe in Semabok, Malacca, when he was confronted by two machete-wielding men at 4:30pm on July 18. “They wanted my smartphone, money and other belongings. I handed them over but they demanded more money from me,” he said. Lau, who had previously attended martial arts classes so that he would be more marketable in the film industry, said one of the robbers then attempted to slash him. At that point, Lau instinctively used his kung fu skills to dodge the assailant.
Recalling the brief scary moment, Lau said several other patrons at the cybercafe ran to his aid and the two robbers fled on a motorcycle.
They took off with Lau’s wallet and other belongings.
“Luckily I was unhurt,” he said, adding that he was still traumatised by the episode.
“Previously, I was supposed to help the ‘heroines’ in the movies who were attacked by bad hats. But this time it happened to me for real.”
