Publication Date : 20-09-2013
Both Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak and his deputy Muhyiddin Yassin will be defending their posts at the October 19 United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) election.
Najib said his decision to defend his party president’s post was due to support for his leadership at the grassroots level.
“The state UMNO liaison bodies have made a resolution that I should continue to lead the party,” he said.
“In addition to the opinions and views voiced at the branch meetings, a majority of the UMNO members want me to continue to lead the party,” he told reporters after opening the Middle Temple Conference here on Thursday.
The election of the party supreme council members and divisional representatives to the UMNO General Assembly, scheduled for December, will be held simultaneously at the divisional meetings on October 19.
The registration of candidates for all posts at the supreme council or divisional committee level will be held on Saturday at the UMNO headquarters.
Asked if there was any challenger to the president’s post, Najib said: “Wait for Saturday.”
On whether Kedah state chief Mukhriz Mahathir had met him to discuss the possibility of him running for vice-president, Najib said: “Of course, I meet a lot of people.”
Umno, said Najib, had proven itself to be a dynamic party, adding that changes would take place in the party at different levels, including at the top, from time to time.
He added that it was important to beef-up on Umno’s value system, such as fighting for the party’s interest above all, rejecting money politics and looking after the interest of the rakyat.
Muhyiddin said UMNO grassroots leaders and members had voiced support for his “combination with the prime minister”.
Expressing support for Najib to defend the UMNO presidency, Muhyiddin said “I will be his proposer”.
In return, it is learnt that Najib will be Muhyiddin’s proposer.
