More efforts to reduce poverty among ethnic groups, Vietnam PM urges

Publication Date : 16-01-2014

Vietnam's Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has asked the Committee on Ethnic Minority Affairs to exert more efforts to significantly reduce poverty among the country's ethnic communities between 2016 to 2020.

He said this during a progress review and vision casting meeting for the committee, adding that the committee should continue with its existing programmes and policies to eradicate poverty.

Key tasks for 2014, he said, include actively addressing the needs and concerns of ethnic communities.

Dung said that it was also important to find ways to increase job opportunities and improve living conditions of the ethnic people through providing housing, electricity, clean water and other basic infrastructure.

He said that the government placed ethnic affairs as a priority, and listed a number of policies put in place to benefit the ethnic groups.

The work to improve the lives of the ethnic communities has seen great strides, Dung said, but there are still major challenges to overcome, especially those relating to poverty, poor access to health services and underdeveloped infrastructures.
