Major Japanese shabu-shabu chain passes off ordinary beef as high-end

Some outlets of a major shabu-shabu restaurant chain served ordinary Japanese beef disguised as brand beef from at least April 2012 through the end of this July, the chain’s operating company has announced.
According to the Nagoya-based Kisoji Co., restaurants in Osaka, Kobe, and Kariya, Aichi Prefecture, served a total of 7,171 meals with regular meat substituted for high-end beef such as Matsuzaka and Saga beef.
The chain’s Kita-Shinchi restaurant in Kita Ward, Osaka, served 6,880 shabu-shabu and sukiyaki dishes made with beef different from the brand names listed on the menu. Its Kobe Harborland restaurant in Chuo Ward, Kobe, served 245 such meals and another 245 were presented to customers at its restaurant in Kariya.
The misrepresented beef was used in a “specially selected Japanese marbled beef” course priced at 5,500 yen (US$54), and a “Matsuzaka beef” course priced at 7,000 yen ($68), a company official said.
