MH370 SEARCH: Malaysian Bar warns families to be wary of US lawyers
Publication Date : 14-04-2014
The Malaysian Bar is cautioning families who had loved ones on board the missing Flight MH370 to be wary of American lawyers offering their services in Malaysia.
Council president Christopher Leong said the Bar would take action against these law firms if reports about their activities were true and if they continue.
“It is illegal for them to provide any kind of legal services in Malaysia, including legal advice.
“They will be contravening our laws, including the Legal Profession Act,” he said.
Leong said families should be careful and check if the professional indemnity or insurance policies of such foreign lawyers would cover for any wrong or negligent legal services provided by such lawyers.
“We have already read in the news of an American law firm providing legal advice which resulted in a premature and wrong legal action or suit being commenced in America, which invited strong criticism and rebuke from an American court,” said Leong.
Last month, a Chicago-based firm reportedly sought to represent aggrieved families from China and Malaysia.
On Saturday, a Houston-based law firm attempted to meet families at a hotel in Kuala Lumpur. A media consultant to the press said the meeting was cancelled but no reason was provided.
An advertisement calling on families to attend the meeting appeared in a local daily earlier.
Leong pointed out Malaysia had laws against touting or ambulance chasing, and the Bar Council would be looking into the conduct of these foreign firms.
