MH370 CRASH: 'Inquiry body must be ready to give answers'
Publication Date : 28-03-2014
The issue of the black box in the missing MH370 plane raised a storm in the Dewan Rakyat (Malaysian Lower House of Parliament), with opposition MPs demanding that a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) or a parliamentary select committee (PSC) be immediately formed.
This followed an announcement by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Shahidan Kassim that the government would form either the RCI or PSC only after the black box is found.
“The question of setting up the RCI or PSC was seriously discussed by the government.
“We have agreed to form either the RCI or PSC but only after the plane’s black box is found,” he said in reply to Anthony Loke Siew Fook (DAP - Seremban) yesterday.
Shahidan added that locating the black box was of utmost importance as the government was aware of the negative foreign media reports against Malaysia, including Muslims here.
Lim Kit Siang (DAP-Gelang Patah) urged Shahidan, who is in charge of parliamentary affairs, to review the decision and set up an inquiry body now and not wait for the black box to surface.
“Does it mean there is no need to set up an RCI or PSC if the black box is not found?” he asked.
“We cannot wait. The body must be formed to answer all questions raised of MH370.”
Others who joined the debate included Azmin Ali (PKR-Gombak), who raised the issue of foreigners entering the country on stolen passports, and Khalid Samad (PAS-Shah Alam), who accused the Royal Malaysian Air Force of slow response to the flight’s turnback.
Kinabatangan MP Bung Mokhtar Radin, who is the Barisan Nasional Backbenchers’ Club deputy chairman, defended the Government’s stance, saying it would be pointless to debate the issues if the black box is not found first.
Anuar Musa (BN-Ketereh) chided the opposition lawmakers on their insistence to form the inquiry body even without data from the black box, alleging they wanted to use it to vilify the government.
“The inquiry body will be formed in the interest of the nation, the rakyat and the world,” he added.
