MH17 CRASH: Black box will not fall into wrong hands, says

Publication Date : 20-07-2014

Malaysia, as the owner of MH17, will ensure that the black boxes will not fall into the hands of any irrelevant quarters, Malasian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said.

He cited international laws which stated that the owner of the plane had every right to the black boxes.

“We must follow the international law. Those who have no rights whatsoever cannot claim or take over control of the black boxes,” he told reporters after meeting with families of victims of the MH17 tragedy here yesterday.

Also present was his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor.

Najib also said the government was doing its best to bring home the remains of the Malaysian nationals.

“Our team has arrived in Kiev and we are in the midst of making arrangements to enter the area of the scene in eastern Ukraine. It is about 400km away (from Kiev), so there are several procedures that must be adhered to before they can get into the area,” Bernama quoted him as saying.

Najib and Rosmah spent about two hours meeting with the next-of-kin of the people onboard the flight.

Many of the relatives were shedding tears during the meeting.

Also present were Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Aziz Kaprawi, Deputy Communication and Multimedia Minister Datuk Jailani Johari and Wanita Umno chief Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil.

Najib also tweeted yesterday that he shared the grief of those who lost their loved ones on Flight MH17 because his step-grandmother was among those who died in the tragedy.

Puan Sri Siti Amirah Kusuma, 83, was travelling home to Jakarta alone from Amsterdam when disaster struck.

She had gone there for a vacation with her daughter.

Her niece, who wished to be known only as Arina, hopes there would be a closure amid the unknown fate of her aunt’s remains.
