July vehicle sales rise on aggressive campaign in Malaysia

Vehicle sales in Malaysia continued to show growth on a month-on-month and year-to-date basis, according to figures released by the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) for July this year.

The 2.9 per cent and 3 per cent month-on-month and year-to-date growth rates, respectively, were due to aggressive sales campaigns by industry players and the rush for deliveries in conjunction with the Eid celebrations.

MAA said that the sales volume for July exceeded the previous month’s figure by 1,706 units.

It said total industry volume on a year-to-date basis to July was 3 per cent or 11,490 units higher than the corresponding period of 2013.

Looking at the data for July, a total 60,267 units were sold during the month.

Of that, 53,578 units were passenger vehicles, while some 6,689 were commercial vehicles.

On a year-to-date basis to July, a total 393,409 vehicle units were sold. Of this, 350,357 units or 89 per cent were passenger vehicles while 43,052 units were commercial vehicles.

On the production side, a total 52,309 vehicles were produced in July. This consisted of 47,707 passenger vehicles and 4,602 commercial vehicles. Production trailed total sales of 60,267 by 7,958 units for July.

On a year-to-date basis up to July, a total 358,904 vehicles were produced. Some 329,200 units were passenger vehicles while 29,704 commercial vehicles. Total production for the period trailed total sales of 393,409 by 34,505 units.

Looking forward to August, MAA anticipates the sales volume to be similar to the July levels, due to the longer working month and the continuation of the aggressive promotional campaign by car companies.
