Indonesian ministry to lose control over haj fund
Publication Date : 16-07-2014
Indonesia's Religious Affairs Minister Lukman Hakim Saifuddin said the government would ensure transparency in the haj pilgrimage through the draft law on haj funding management.
He said that the government was expected to pass the law before President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono administration ended its term in October.
“There will be a separation between organisation of the haj and management of the fund,” he said as quoted by tribunnews.com.
Currently, the organisation of the haj and management of the fund are the jurisdiction of the ministry. After the new law is endorsed, the haj fund will be managed by an independent body.
Notoriously known as a corrupt ministry, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is investigating former minister Suryadharma Ali and former ministry director general for the haj and umrah Anggito Abimanyu in connection to graft allegations in the organisation of the 2012-2013 haj to Saudi Arabia.
