INDONESIA POLLS: Aid disbursement delayed in Central Java to avoid misuse
Publication Date : 03-06-2014
Central Java has delayed the disbursement of social assistance funds (bansos) in the run up to the presidential election.
The delay is a response to a recent statement by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) that bansos funds are prime targets of embezzlement.
Central Java’s acting provincial secretary Sri Puryono said that in fact a small percentage of the bansos had already been disbursed.
“However, a larger share of the funds have not been disbursed because they are still being observed and examined,” Puryono said in Semarang on Monday.
The delay, he added, would stay in effect until the budget change in August, or until after the presidential election.
Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo said the reason for the delay in the disbursement of bansos funds and grants also stemmed from recommendations made by several regents and mayors.
“Several regents have expressed the desire that the bansos funds proposed by community groups be withdrawn and be re-purposed to finance roadwork in the regions,” said Ganjar.
