Publication Date : 06-05-2014

An 83-year-old woman died when a wall collapsed on her during Monday's magnitude 6.3 earthquake that hit north Thailand.

She was identified as Saeng Linkham of Mae Lao district in Chiang Rai province.

The quake struck at 6:08pm and was followed by more than 50 aftershocks. About a hundred aftershocks have been felt, resulting in blackout in many areas and forcing evacuation of patients from local hospitals.

Buildings and temples in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai were damaged with the earthquake felt in high-rise buildings in Bangkok.

The quake was one of the strongest recorded in Thailand, which does not sit on any major fault lines.
