Publication Date : 06-08-2014
Airports Corporation of Vietnam will upgrade and expand a terminal at the Tan Son Naht International Airport in HCM City for a total cost of 2.31 billion dong (US$114.2 million).
Vietnam Transport Minister Dinh La Thang has approved ACV's proposal to do the upgrade and expansion of terminal T2 at the HCM City airport.
The project will expand the terminal by 22,000 square meters to 115,834sq., with a 40-per cent increase in check-in counters to 120 and 19 boarding gates.
The work, which is scheduled for completion in 2017, will enable the terminal to handle 13 million passengers a year, an increase of 3 million over the current capacity.
The first stage of the project will start in November this year and is expected to be completed in a year at a cost of 1.5 trillion dong.
According to the ACV, the terminal is expected to serve 29 million passengers, including 13 million foreigners, by 2018.
Long Thanh International Airport in neighbouring Dong Nai Province can only be completed after 2024, the ACV said.
"In the next 10 years the international terminal at Tan Son Nhat Airport will remain the major facility for international passengers flying to the southern region of Viet Nam. Therefore, expansion of T2 is a necessity."
Since the land required for the expansion belongs to it, the public would not be affected, it added.
