Giant pandas celebrate birthdays and first anniversary in S'pore
Publication Date : 06-09-2013
A party was held in honour of giant pandas Kai Kai and Jia Jia's birthdays in Singapore on Friday morning.
The birthday bash marked the start of week-long festivities at Singapore's River Safari to commemorate their birthdays and one-year anniversary in Singapore.
Female Jia Jia turned five on September 3 and Kai Kai, the male panda, turns six on September 14. The cuddly duo, here on a 10-year loan from China, made their Singapore debut exactly a year ago on September 6.
At the party, Kai Kai was greeted with a three-tiered birthday cake made of ice, bamboo and his favourite treats, while Jia Jia received a chime toy made of bamboo stems. These presents were created by 10 panda party planners - members of the public who went behind-the-scenes with panda keepers to prepare the treats.
In the past year, the pandas' personalities have also become more pronounced, said Wildlife Reserves Singapore's chairman Claire Chiang.
The initially laidback Kai Kai has become more active and is spotted climbing trees at 5pm everyday.
Jia Jia, the shyer of the two, has started showing her playful side and can be seen tumbling down slopes and knocking down trees. Her antics have uprooted at least 10 trees, which the wildlife park's horticulture team has had to replant.
