Dusit plans entry into Myanmar

Publication Date : 11-07-2014

Dusit International, Thailand's hospitality chain, is eyeing to establish its presence in Myanmar through the opening of dusitD2 Residence in Yangon.

DusitD2 Resident Yangon is among over 10 properties under planning and development of the chain that operates

"Myanmar bears enormous potential in the tourism industry, offering a wide diversity of tourism attractions ranging from historical, cultural, beaches and even snow-capped mountains in the North," Rustom Vickers, group director of development, Dusit International, explained why the chain is expanding into the country.

Saying that the property in Yangon will be jointly invested with a Japanese corporation with interests in the country, Vickers noted that the proposed hotel/serviced residence will target predominantly long stay guests, corporations which have businesses in Yangon and this will be be further supported by transient leisure guests.

"Located in an accessible and pleasant environment, this property will serve the market very well and definitely improve the accommodation offerings in the city," he said in an e-mailed interview.

Since reopening its doors in 2012, Myanmar has welcomed an influx of business investors and tourists. This year, the country expects to welcome 3 million visitor arrivals, compared to 2.04 million last year. Yangon International Airport, the country's main gateway, has recorded over 500,000 foreign travellers entering Myanmar from January 1 to the end of June 2014. A number of companies have opened offices in the country.

This is in stark contrast to the available supplies of hotel rooms and serviced apartments for corporate executives. According to the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism, the number of hotels in Myanmar has risen to 1,000 with combined capacity of 38,722 rooms. Of all, only six are five-star. The rest comprised 17 four-star, 83 three-star, 116 two-star and 102 one-star hotels, along with the ministry-approved 599 hotels, motels and inns. Room rates have been skyrocketing.

The facts convinced Vickers that dusitD2 Residence Yangon would succeed.

"dusitD2 brand focuses on contemporary, efficient design and convenience for modern day travellers. We believe this will be very successful for Myanmar due to the dynamics of the hotel market and profile of guests visiting the country," he said.

Having been established six decades ago, Dusit International operates 21 properties in a number of countries like United Arab Emirates, Egypt, China, India and the Philippines under four major brands: Dusit Thani Hotels & Resorts, Dusit Devarana Hotels & Resorts, dusitD2 Hotels & Resorts and Dusit Princess Hotel and Resorts. Dusit International also operates Dusit Residence Serviced Apartments and its signature Devarana Spa.

The development of over 20 properties is underway.

The chain this week just secured the contract to manage 400-room dusitD2 Tianjin in China.

Tianjin is the largest coastal city in northern China. It is approximately 30 minutes from Beijing by high-speed train. The city has more than 300 Fortune 500 companies and is an important hub for high-end industries such as electronic information engineering, automobiles, equipment manufacturing, wide-bodied aircraft assembly and new energy. Tianjin is also a major seaport and a gateway to China's capital.
