Confusion surrounds gas explosion in Karachi

Publication Date : 12-02-2013

Confusion surrounded an explosion near Qayyumabad Bridge in Karachi’s Defence Area when three different reports regarding the nature of the blast surfaced on Monday night.

The explosion was heard from far distances and spread fear among residents of neighbouring areas.

Sources at the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) suggested it was a cracker attack which destroyed the walls of a sub-station. However, they also added that gas records remained safe in the attack.

Police sources, on the other hand, said the explosion ripped through a gas pipeline near Qayyumabad Bridge, injuring a policeman in the process.

Later, the Karachi Police's bomb disposal squad suggested that it was an act of terrorism.

Police representatives said the planted bomb was detonated by a time device and around 200 kilograms of explosive material was used in the blast.
