Chinese micro-blogger Xue granted bail

Publication Date : 18-04-2014

Xue Charles Bi-Chuen, a micro-blogger arrested in August on allegations of having group sex with prostitutes, has been granted bail with restricted liberty of movement, Beijing police said on Wednesday.

The police said on its micro blog that, given the fact that Xue has a serious disease, the police decided to grant him bail.

Xue had been under detention since his arrest, and it was not clear when he will be tried.

Xue apologised on Wednesday to the victims who were hurt by him through his forwarding of online posts. He also apologised to his family members and online followers for group sex activities.

Operating as "Xue Manzi" on his micro blog with 12 million followers, Xue said he issued about 85,000 posts via his micro blog, including unverified information later proved to be rumors. He also posted some advertisements to make money.

Referring to China's move to criminalise the spreading of online rumors, Xue said "freedom of speech cannot override the law".
