TAIPEI: Taiwan's National Immigration Agency recently promoted a canine companion to the ranks of its Taipei City Specialised Operations Brigade. BuBu, a Taiwanese mixed-breed, was rescued from a group of illegal immigrants who were preparing to slaughter him. After discovering that BuBu was highly alert and had good reflexes, brigade members began bringing the dog along on duty, which is where the pooch proved his worth.

Taiwan's National Immigration Agency (NIA) recently promoted a canine companion to the ranks of its Taipei City Specialised Operations Brigade.

According to brigade member Kuo Chun-hua, BuBu, a Taiwanese mixed-breed, was rescued from a group of illegal immigrants who were preparing to slaughter him.

Kuo said that he and his colleagues happened to be raiding a workers compound that day.

“When we kicked the door down, we saw four illegal immigrants, who were previously seated around a cooking pot, take a run for it, leaving a pot full of food and an emaciated dog,” Kuo said.

Kuo said that he felt sorry for the whimpering canine and unchained it.

“Originally I thought that the dog would run away, but instead, he wagged his tail and licked my hand, as if he'd found a long lost relative. He followed me to my car ... I thought that it would be nice to have a dog as a companion; since I was going to care for him, he would have to have a name. He had a sad expression on his face so I called him Blue Blue, which later became BuBu,” Kuo said.

After discovering that BuBu was highly alert and had good reflexes, Kuo began bringing the dog along on duties to see whether he'd be suited for the work.

Kuo said that BuBu had saved him on several occasions.

Once during a pursuit, brigade members chased an illegal immigrant down into a basement which was pitch black.

“We couldn't see anything, (but) I heard BuBu barking behind me. I turned around with my flash light and saw that the immigrant was about to strike me with an iron bar,” Kuo said.

During Chinese New Year, Kuo had a jacket made for BuBu with the NIA's logo on it. The dog was officially accepted as a member of the brigade.

“We're very happy to have BuBu. The NIA is his home, and the members of the brigade are his family,” Kuo said.
