Bangladeshi dies of Mers in S. Arabia

A Bangladeshi woman died of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (Mers), a viral respiratory illness caused by a coronavirus, on Saturday in the western city of Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, confirmed Bangladesh embassy yesterday.
Mentioning this case as the first for any Bangladeshi, ambassador Shahidul Islam at Bangladesh embassy in Saudi Arabia, however, told The Daily Star over the phone that they were not informed about the details of the 40-year-old woman.
The Saudi health ministry announced seven new deaths, including death of the Bangladeshi, from Mers, raising the country's death toll to 94, reported Arab News yesterday.
“We have started a campaign among our people to be aware of the virus in the mostly affected areas, including Riyadh, Jeddah, and Eastern province,” said the Bangladesh envoy.
He claimed that there is no worry of spreading the virus through its returnee migrants.
The Saudi government has taken the issue seriously to contain the threat of the killer disease, said Shahidul.
