Publication Date : 30-08-2013
Asean defence ministers have agreed to explore practical cooperation in cyber-security and social media management, said Malaysia's Defence Minister Hishammuddin Tun Hussein.
He said they had also agreed to promote the principle of non-use of force in settling disputes through conferences and dialogues.
“We also agreed to forge regional cooperation through the Asean secretariat and discuss issues that they are collectively responsible for,” he said in a statement from Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei, where he was attending the Asean Defence Ministers meeting on Thursday.
Hishammuddin said they also talked about creating synergy between security and defence.
He said this included the sharing of information and cross-boundary cooperation, regional border cooperation and information sharing.
He added that he had also held several bilateral discussions with his Asean counterparts.
Hishammuddin said the issues discussed in the bilateral sessions included the exchange of views and ideas on regional and international security issues, such as what had happened in Egypt and Syria.
