Japan responsible for tensions: Chinese foreign minister
Publication Date : 09-03-2013
Japan is responsible for the current tensions between China and Japan, Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said at a press conference on the sidelines of the ongoing national parlimentary session in Beijing on Saturday.
China hopes Japan can face up to the reality and take real steps to correct the mistake and resolve the conflict through dialogue before it spins out of control, Yang said, urging Japan to make concrete efforts, improve relations with China and play a positive, responsible role for peace and stability in the region.
Also included in Yang's foreign policy discussion was the fact that China is going to host the APEC leaders meeting next year and all preprations are well underway. He explained that China welcomes the US's constructive role in Asia-Pacific region, but the US side also needs to respect China's concerns and interests. Asia-Pacific issues should be handled by countries in the region, while the US helps promote peace and stability.
Today in the 21 century when our world is confronted with many problems and challenges, Yang said, it is important for China and the US to find collective courage to seek common ground, shelving differences and working together to build new relations between major countries.
Yang also spoke against the tensions on the Korean Peninsula, calling for all parties to stay calm, and stick to dialogue, foster mutual trust, work jointly, and bring about enduring peace. He said his country was ready to continue to work with other parties and international organisations to achieve that goal.
Looking back on his term of service, the minister said he highly valued the opportunity to serve the country. Yang said he felt proud of China's rising strength and international status.
